This journal is Edward Nicholas Heygate's illustrated, narrative account of his travels in Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean from May 1853 to February 1855. Heygate, an Englishman, described the stops on his itinerary as well as his modes of transportation, life in the Bahamas, and return to London.

Lucy Stone (b. Aug. 13, 1818, West Brookfield, MA–d. Oct. 18, 1893, Boston, MA) was born to parents Hannah Matthews and Francis Stone. Born in London on June 23, 1827, Edward Nicholas Heygate was the son of Baronet William Heygate of Southend, England. He had three brothers: Frederick William, William Unwin, and Robert Henry John. Heygate was captain in a regiment of Royal Engineers stationed in Nassau, Bahamas, from 1853-1855. On his way to the Caribbean in 1853, he visited the United States and Canada.
